Michael Phelps started chasing his Olympic history by getting off to a memorable start, by winning his heat in the 400m individual medley in record time. The American boy is the closest he has ever been to Mark Spitz’s record who won seven golds in 1972.

He cruised into Sunday’s final with a time of 4 minutes 7.82 seconds.
